EU-CORE Winter School 2026

The 2026 edition of the EU-CORE Winter School took place from 2 to 6 February at Centrale Nantes. This event brought together students, academic and industrial partners to discuss renewable energy with a particular focus on wind.

The EU-CORE Winter School offered a rich programme of scientific and technical lectures dedicated to wind energy.

It provided students with an exciting opportunity to deepen their knowledge and explore topics beyond the core curriculum of their degree programme.

Blending lectures, workshops and presentations, the programme covered a wide range of subjects, from artificial intelligence and control systems, to economics and European values. The topics included:

  • Supervised learning, AI - Rémi Parrot (Centrale Nantes)
  • The economics of renewable energy - Rodical Loisel (Nantes University)
  • Storage economics - Rodica Loisel (Nantes University)
  • Control of Wind Turbines - David Collet (IFPEN)
  • Data-based control application to wind turbines - Moein Sarbandi (Centrale Nantes)
  • Open Science - Mathias Legrand (Centrale Nantes)
  • European citizenship and values - Caroline Kerello (Centrale Nantes)
  • Soft Skills, what else? - Emilie Guyot
Beyond the academic programme, participants had the opportunity to discover the history of Guérande salt and its famous salt marshes during a visit to Terre de Sel — a sunny and memorable first experience for many.

Showcasing First-Semester Projects

The Winter School also marked an important milestone: the presentation of first-semester group projects. Throughout the semester, students worked in teams under the guidance of PhD mentors and faculty members. They presented their projects before their peers, supervising PhD students, professors from Centrale Nantes, and academic partners from UNIZG and BTU.

At the end of the session, the professors selected the most outstanding project. The winning team - represented by Sara Abdelaziz and Naufal Rivani - defended their work on:
“Implementation of Unified Control for Grid-Connected PMSG-Based Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Systems.”

The selected group received a souvenir from the visit to Guérande in recognition of their achievement.

The event concluded with students collecting programme-branded souvenirs — a notebook, tote bag and T-shirt — thoughtfully curated by the cohort and featuring the programme and European logos.

The Winter School marks the end of the first semester at Centrale Nantes, before students continue their academic journey in Zagreb for the second semester.
