As a university in the heart of the region Lusatia, BTU is the innovation driver of structural change in this region. With the Coal Region Structural Strengthening Act, BTU received the political and financial backing to initiate extensive colloaborative projects dedicated to the grand challenges of our time and to consolidate BTU's research profile.

At the meeting point between economy and science, major projects have emerged, for example Chesco (Center for Hybrid Electric Systems Cottbus) or the Energy Innovation Centre, which is developing solutions and technologies for a climate-neutral supply. One of the most outstanding structural change projects is the Lauitz Science Park, which will be build in Cottbus over the next few years. BTU is working on this innovation landscape with international appeal together with the state of Bandenburg, the Fraunhofer Society, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Leibniz Association and companies such as LEAF, BASF Schwarzheide, Beutsche Bahn and Rolls-Royce.
